My best friend/brother, Ian DeSousa died early this morning. I don’t have any words right now, just a lot of gratitude. For over 20 years he’s had my back and I’ve had his. The hole in my heart is tremendous. But we got the gift of being able to say everything we needed to each other. He knew I loved him and I know he loved me. Our last convo a few days ago I told him it was ok, he could let go. He told me, he was ready, and he’d see me again. He’s at peace and out of pain now. I’m grateful for his wife @_lavender_rainbow for taking such good care of him and his sister @leiadesousa and father for always making me feel like I was apart of the family. Big love to everyone who knew and loved him. I’ll see you again my damie. 💔

In episode 2, we talked about one theory that came out after Billey Joe Johnson Jr. died — that he might have taken his own life. His friends and family don’t believe it, which brings us to this week’s episode: The Autopsy. ⁠

In Sept. 2008, three months before Billey Joe died, the Mississippi legislature issued a damning report. It concluded that the state medical examiner’s office lacked the staff and resources to ensure that suspicious deaths could be “resolved competently.”⁠
⁠
When Billey Joe died in December, the office was “absolutely in transition,” said Tucker Carrington, the founding director of the Innocence Project at the University of Mississippi’s School of Law. “Things were still messy. They’re still messy now.” ⁠
⁠
So Billey Joe’s autopsy was outsourced to a private company of forensic pathologists out of Tennessee that conducted autopsies. Dr. Adele Lewis was one of their pathologists, and conducted Billey Joe’s autopsy.⁠

What Dr. Lewis found would help convince the grand jury that Billey Joe’s death was an accidental shooting. But questions have been raised about her findings. ⁠

In episode 3, Reveal’s @Al_Letson and Jonathan R. Jones travel to Nashville to interview Dr. Lewis, who is now the chief medical examiner for Tennessee. They present her with another report that calls her conclusions into question.⁠

I started performing Summer in Sanctuary, 10 years ago. This marks the end of the journey. I’m retiring the show after an amazing run that took me Off-Broadway, all around the country, and extended run in San Francisco. The story of working at the Sanctuary on 8th St. change my life
and my perception of the world. The people I met there, and all the ppl who worked on the show, have become family. I am forever grateful.

I’ve been on the road now for a few weeks, dealing with some really hard stuff involving a family member. To be honest it’s breaking my heart. I’m also doing speaking engagements. Today when I walked into the school of Journalism at University of South Carolina I was hit with a wave of gratitude. If I could go back in time I wouldn’t change anything but I’d tell that dyslexic kid I was, it was all gonna be alright. Keep dreaming, do the work to make the dream come true and keep believing. I barely graduated high school. Never went to college, but now they bring me into speak. Still a hard journey ahead, but God is good, all day errday.
